This resonates so deeply with me. As a 60 year old woman who grew up surrounded by beauty industry and former makeup artist, I feel that the “influencers” who are losing the most credibility are those marketing to my demographic. “Mature skin” “anti-aging” “best luxury products” etc. why is there an assumption that I am more gullible at my age, and/or have money to burn? I buy what works, what ingredients I trust and only read verified reviews. Worst line I hear from mature influencers js “if you know me you know I am picky about what I put on my face, neck, hair, etc” then they promote the same product 5 other “mature influencers” are on YouTube promoting. It’s all such BS. Thanks for keeping it real!!!
As an MUA sing hallelujah! I have been on IG for 2 years, I buy EVERYTHING myself & I show how to enjoy, use, play with makeup, not all reviews & recommendations, as we know it’s more about the application than the product so I try to educate & to grow is sooo hard. All people want is reviews so they buy more crap but don’t know how to use it😬 I think the tide is turning but it’s not there yet…..
Really good read. I’m in the UK and there’s probably 4 people I trust, as products they’ve steered me to have always worked brilliantly for me. But then they’re not influencers per se - they’re journalists/brand owners who have been around for years and really know their stuff. And aren’t afraid to call out the BS they see online. This correction is much needed. Thank you, as ever.
Thanks so much for writing this! As someone who got into makeup during the rise of YouTube and the makeup influencer, it's been interesting to see how social media has changed in the industry.
I'm curious to hear your thoughts about someone who'd like to become an "expert". It seems as if freelancing is no longer a viable way to gain hands-on experience and learn more about techniques and artistry. Do you have any recommendations for someone starting out and looking to improve their skills?
I learned this way back when....with the Dinosaurs roaming freely, of course...when magazines like Vogue, Allure, Elle, Harper's Bazaar would put in print that the model's makeup was "This face product, this eyeshadow, this lipstick from this brand". Then I went out and bought it all and it looked like something not at all like the model.
One reason why I appreciate YOU so much. I feel like I'm cruising at 35K with your recommendations while everyone else is down there at 10K on TikTok.
Thanks Emily 🥰

Hallelujah! Sing it from the raftors. Love this information, have agreed with you the entire time and am so glad to see these changes.

How are people being duped? It's unreal.
